Here are your Chelsea morning headlines for Sunday, October 4.
Silva a “fantastic signing” – Cole
Chelsea defender Thiago Silva could be the signing of the season for Frank Lampard’s side, according to Joe Cole.
The Blues have spent more than £200 million during the summer, but it is Brazilian Silva – who arrived on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain – whom Cole believes could be an invaluable addition.
“Thiago Silva is a fantastic signing,”he told BT Sport. “One thing we talked about with Chelsea last year was the quality of the youngsters, the energy, but there were times in the season when there was a little bit of naivety in the back four.
“Thiago coming in, you look around Europe and there isn’t a better veteran centre-back, someone who can come in and not only perform, his job will be to help the players around him on the pitch and off the pitch by setting the tone of hat winning is all about.
“I think Thiago Silva, as soon as he settles, could be the signing of the season for Chelsea.”
Chilwell slots in comfortably for Chelsea
New Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell was the star man in his team’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Football.London Chelsea correspondent Oliver Habord reports that despite it being Chilwell’s first start in the league for Chelsea, it looked like he had been playing with the club for years.
He writes: “Chilwell slotted nicely in and gave something Frank Lampard had been desperate to have on the left flank over the course of his reign so far.
“In the defensive aspect, Chilwell was solid and added to the back four nicely, providing a balance on both sides of the ball.”
He also points out that the former Leicester City defender ended his first game with three interceptions to his name, with another clearance to deny Palace.
The 23-year-old also had two shots, with one finding the back of the net, and providing an assist to Kurt Zouma.
Chelsea’s “no” to Hudson-Odoi offer
Chelsea have rejected a bid from Bayern Munich for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The Champions League winners – who also tried to recruit the 19-year-old in 2018 and 2019 – wanted the youngster on loan with a view to a £70 million transfer next summer.
Sky Germany reported earlier this week that there had been a breakthrough in talks over the possibility of Bayern signing Hudson-Odoi, who started Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Blues boss Frank Lampard said: “There is no definitive answer, we will know by Monday whether there is.
“Callum is our player, what Callum wants comes into consideration, it has to work for us.”
Bayern manager Hansi Flick confirmed that his club has shown interest in Hudson-Odoi.
He said: “I don’t know what will happen. He’s one of the best talents in his position and can play as a winger and even as a striker.
“That’s why Bayern Munich is thinking about him.”
